WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: WARWICKSHIRE Bears’ second string side extended their winning streak to ten games after beating a determined Worcester Wolves on the road 47-33 in the Third Division South & West.

With the Bears missing forward Rick Powell who was at the Invictus game trials, Sunday’s clash in Worcester was always going to be a difficult task for the Bears and so it proved.

From the tip off the Wolves came out on top and took an early lead with the Bears not able to respond quickly as they fell behind.

But as the quarter developed, the Bears began to find the basket and were able to pull back the score to go into the break level at 12-12.

The visitors’ defence began to have more of an impact in the second quarter which allowed them to hold a narrow 29-20 lead at the half-way point in the match.

The third quarter was again decisive in favour of the Bears and their strong defence as they limited Wolves to only six points for the quarter, while doubling their score to go 15 points in front.

With the clock against them, Wolves came out fighting in the last quarter but the Bears were a match for their intensity and were able to see out the game comfortably.

“I’m really proud of the team, as I knew this would be a hard fought game from a talented Wolves team,” said Bears coach Tom Masterson.

“With one of our strong forwards, Rick Powell, missing due to Invictus trials this weekend, I knew this would be a tough challenge for the team, but we still had our MVP from today’s game, Dan Gill playing and then going down to the trials after the game.”

The Bears are next in action when the third team play the last round of Division Four games in Gloucester on April 22.

The Bears are still searching for new players and sponsors. Anyone interested should email [email protected] or call 07946518354.
