Tae Kwon Do stars club together for charity

A HOST of Solihull Tae Kwon Do clubs joined forces in the fight to protect young children by raising over £4,500 for the NSPCC.

Clubs from Solihull, Shirley, Knowle, Yardley, Chelmsley Wood, Kings Heath and Hall Green competed against each other at a charity event organised by local instructors Steve Merricks and Alan Slater.

It is the 12th time the clubs have come together to stage the event with over £55,000 raised for the children’s charity.

“Initially it was our way of encouraging students to make the first steps into competition and tournaments but also a means of giving something back to the larger community,” Steve explained.

“This year’s event was also attended by the Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Solihull, which made it an even more special day for us.”

Alan added: “The format of the competition brings together students from other local clubs making up teams with each other.

“Each team competes in a league with the top two teams making the final. It’s a great way of introducing students into competition and building confidence within themselves.

“We would personally like to thank everyone that came along, sponsored and supported us once again, in raising such a fantastic amount, for the NSPCC.”
