BIRMINGHAM and Solihull Bees took part in a charity match to raise funds for the Matt Gallagher Foundation who previously represented the club.

Club president Rona Higgins sent a select team to play The Guanos – a North Midlands Barbarians select XV.

The game took place in aid of former Bees player Matt Gallagher who was diagnosed with MND last October.

And the hot weather meant the game took place in four 20-minute quarters.

The Bees struck first as Umran scored the game’s opening try while Calum Antonio and Ben Phillips both crossed twice.

However, former Bee Stephan Fourie responded with a try for Guanos.

And Fourie touched down again after the break while Josh Miles also dotted down.

However, Lewis Edwards scored for the Bees before Antonio completed his hat-trick.

And Ben Phillips was next to touch down for the Bees before Cameron May’s stunning try completed the scoring.

Referee Damien Webb kindly gave up his spare time to officiate the fixture and asked for his match fee to go towards the Matt Gallagher Foundation.

Higgins said: “The club is run and maintained by a wonderful group of volunteers, who have all contributed to getting this day up and running, I owe them a hugh debt of gratitude.

“The game supports one of our own, ex-player Matt Gallagher, in his fight against MND, we wish him all the best.”
