HOCKEY: A DRAMATIC 4-3 victory at home to Gloucester City moves Olton to within just one point of joint leaders Stourport and Buckingham in the Investec Conference West league.
Both sides produced some excellent hockey at Grand Road on Saturday but Olton did themselves no favours as they surrendered a 4-1 lead to set of a tense final few minutes.
Katie Brough, Mandy Gatherer, Harriet Payne, and Carole Quill all got on the scoresheet to move Olton up to third in the table.
This weekend Olton face a tough away fixture against second-placed Buckingham who have a considerably better goal difference. Whatever the result, Olton will remain in the top three as they start their winter break.
In the men’s section, Olton had a somewhat easier game on Sunday as they ran out 6-2 winners against Cannock in the Men’s Conference North.
Tom Mallett scored his second hat-trick of the season and the other scorers were Martin Ebbage, Mark Wadsley and Martin Webb as Olton remained in second position, now six points behind leaders the University of Durham.
Next Sunday they play Cannock again, this time away, knowing a win or draw will keep them in second place heading into the winter break.
