Olton ladies go top after picking up third victory

THREE games into the new season the two Olton first teams find themselves in good stead as far as the league tables are concerned and although there is a long way to go, in both cases it is a vast improvement on last season, writes John Warner.

The ladies are top of their Division after a 3-1 win away to Oxford Hawks with skipper Kate Brough, Laura Collins and player coach Sally Walton all getting on the scoresheet.

It means the ladies have opened with three straight league wins but this weekend at Grange Road Buckingham will provide a more difficult game having been relegated from the Premier Division last season.

The men are in second place in their division after winning two and losing one. This week they beat Sheffield Hallam 4-1 at Grange Road, with a hat-trick of open play goals from Martin Ebbage and a drag flick from Dan Sulway.

It was a very close game despite the score-line and was 0-0 at half-time after a nervous opening half, well nervous for the home spectators. Early in the second half Ebbage got his first, a spectacular goal from the tightest of angles.

Finally our penalty corner routine came good and Dan Sulway doubled the score. Sheffield pulled one back from a penalty corner four minutes later and literally within a minute, Ebbage had fired us back into a two goal lead. Fourteen minutes later he completed his hat-trick.

A hard fought, but welcome win after last week’s reversal against table topping University of Durham.

Next Saturday they travel to Manchester to play 6th placed Bowdon , who incidentally Olton have drawn in the 2nd round of the Cup, but this time at home on 30th October.

So a satisfactory weekend with the Men’s 2nd XI beating Rugby and the Men’s 3rd XI drawing at Lichfield, both in their respective Midland Premier Divisions.
