Hughes nets on debut to maintain AFC Solihull's 100 per cent start

A DEBUT goal for striker Joel Hughes against WLV Sport was enough to ensure AFC Solihull maintained their 100 per cent winning start in Midland League Division Three.

Hughes, who has previously played at Evo-Stik level for Ossett Town, East Thurrock and Guildford City, netted five minutes from time to gift Solihull their third win on the spin.

Solihull dominated from the outset with defenders Tom Reynolds and Ste Mason having effort from corners cleared off the line while striker Jon Hamer also had a number of chances go begging as the half ended 0-0.

The visitors continued from where they left off and continued to spurn key chances.

Solihull finally found the net when Hamer beat WLV keeper Connah Chalmers to the ball but he was adjudged to have tripped a retreating defender as the ball trickled over the line and the foul was given.

As the game headed into the final five minutes it seemed Solihull would regret their missed chances but Hughes had other ideas as he shifted the ball out of his feet before drilling a low shot past Chalmers.
