ANDY Whing insists he is ‘proud’ of his players after Solihull Moors suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Bromley in the National League Promotion Final at Wembley.

Moors missed out on the chance to secure a first-ever promotion to the Football League after twice coming from behind to take the game to extra time and then penalties.

And Whing was full of praise for his players in the club’s first outing at Wembley despite the cruel nature of the defeat.

Whing said: “I’m extremely proud of the football club to get this far, it’s an unbelievable achievement but we didn’t achieve what we set out to achieve regardless of our expectations at the start of the season.

“To lose on penalties is really cruel but that’s football, I can’t fault anyone, the players were absolutely outstanding and gave absolutely everything, we just fell short in the end.

“We’re still a relatively young football club and we’ll continue to grow with days like this, hopefully we can push on to get there one day.

“I’m gutted for the players, the fans, the chairman and everybody associated with the football club because you get that close and then it’s the flip of a coin with penalties.”
