FOOTBALL - Matt Taylor 'embarrassed' by Solihull Moors performance in Aldershot defeat

MATT Taylor felt ’embarrassed’ after Solihull Moors saw their winless run stretch to nine matches following a 3-1 defeat at Aldershot Town.

Moors trailed by three goals at the break before substitute Fletcher Holman netted a consolation for the visitors late on at the EBB Stadium.

And Solihull striker Conor Wilkinson received a red card moments after Holman’s strike on another difficult night for Taylor’s side.

The result means Moors sit 14th in the National League table, nine points above the relegation zone.

And Taylor wants to make his side more difficult to play against with the Moors head coach yet to win a game at the helm following his appointment last month.

Taylor said: “The players showed self-sabotage, we don’t get the kick-off right and we concede directly from that.

“I saw a group of players who looked fearful because they haven’t won a huge amount of games recently, that’s something we need to be better at.

“I feel slightly embarrassed. The things in football that require no talent, we didn’t do.

“We didn’t win enough first contacts, second balls, tackles, fifty-fifties, we were are own worst enemies.

“It’s a painful one to take, my overriding reaction is that we didn’t do the side of the game you have to do at this level of football.

“We’ve shot ourselves in the foot, it’s too easy to score against us, we need to be more difficult to play against.”

Moors made the worst possible start when Cameron Hargreaves touched the ball over his marker and found the top corner following a set-piece after just two minutes.

And the home side doubled their lead on 16 minutes as Aaron Jones volleyed in Ryan Jones’ cross to put the Shots in command.

Aldershot all but sealed the points on 37 minutes when R Jones finished past Ollie Wright from Luca Woodhouse’s ball over the top of the Moors defence.

Moors reduced the deficit on 76 minutes as Holman raced through and found the net to score his third goal in his last four games.

However, Wilkinson saw red just two minutes later after he initially received a booking and then sarcastically clapped the referee to pick up another caution and subsequent red.

Solihull are next in action against Sutton United on Tuesday, March 4 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Damson Park.
