ALISTAIR LEWIS saved a second-half penalty to earn a valuable point for Earlswood Town after they held 10-man Kenilworth Sporting to a goalless draw.

Lewis capped off a man of the match performance by keeping out Dave Freeman’s 72nd minute penalty to secure a crucial point in their fight for survival at the Pavilions.

The result means the Earls sit 10th in the Midland Football League Division Two table, four points above the relegation zone with two games left to play, with as many as seven teams still aiming to secure safety.

And Earlswood almost took an early lead when Andy Matthews raced through on goal only to shoot straight at Kenilworth goalkeeper George Woodward.

The game proved a tight and cagey affair for large periods with Tom Reynolds’ side relying on counter-attacks as their opponents camped in the Earls’ half.

And Harry Street was then drawn into a tackle in the box only to concede a penalty which Lewis saved, diving low to his left, to keep out his third spot kick from as many attempts this season.

The visitors were then reduced to 10-men on 78 minutes when substitute Connor Mack received a second yellow card after he clattered into Leadun Dunlevy and clashed with Matthews in the aftermath.

And the Earls almost nicked the points at the death only for both Jonathon Hamer and captain Ryan Froggatt to have close range efforts cleared off the line.

Earlswood are next in action at home to Hampton on Saturday, April 2 with kick-off at 3pm at the Pavilions.
