FOOTBALL - Earlswood Town start pre-season with successive draws

EARLSWOOD Town began their pre-season campaign with a Spanish twist as they travelled to Bedfordshire to take on Biggleswade United at Pendleton Sports Centre.

The Earls played out a 2-2 draw against the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division (step five) side whose chairman is renowned football journalist Guillem Balague.

Balague is also an award-winning author having written biographies of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino.

Earlswood’s new signing Louis Bridges won and scored a penalty to put the visitors ahead before his younger brother Michael restored the Earls lead after the break following a Biggleswade equaliser.

However, Biggleswade snatched an equaliser with the last touch of the game to ensure the game ended on level terms with Earls head coach Tom Reynolds encouraged by his side’s performance against a team who play two steps above them.

And the Earls were held to a 2-2 draw in their second pre-season outing of the season against step five Highgate United at St. George’s Park last weekend.

Despite being on the back foot for much of the first half against the Midland Football League Premier Division side, M Bridges broke the deadlock for Earlswood shortly before the break with a fine volley.

However, Highgate scored two goals in the space of five second-half minutes to turn the game in their favour only for the Earls to grab an equaliser on 87 minutes when L Bridges smashed home from close range.

Earlswood continue their pre-season campaign against Saltley Stallions on Saturday, July 16 with kick-off at 12pm.
