FOOTBALL - Earlswood Town all but safe after Hampton victory

Aaron Sutcliffe 5th Apr, 2022 Updated: 6th Apr, 2022

EARLSWOOD Town are now all but assured of safety after beating Solihull rivals 2-1 to end their four-game winless run.

Harry Street’s early goal and a penalty from Andy Matthews secured the points for the home side at The Pavilions.

The result means Earlswood sit ninth in the Midland Football League Division Two table, six points clear of safety with one match left to play.

And the Earls took the lead after just seven minutes when Street finished at the second attempt after his initial effort was saved having cut in from his wing.

The home side were then awarded a penalty when Jordan McKenzie was brought down by the Hampton goalkeeper after running in behind the visiting defence.

And Matthews coolly stepped up to convert the penalty to hand the Earls a two-goal lead heading into the interval.

However, Hampton halved the deficit when Kieran Lawless latched onto a loose ball before rifling past Earls keeper Alastair Lewis to give the away side hope.

Lewis made some fine saves to keep Earlswood ahead before McKenzie had a close range effort saved in the final few minutes by the Hampton keeper.

Earlswood finish their season against ground tenants Barnt Green Spartak on Saturday, April 16 with kick-off at 3pm at The Pavilions.
