FOOTBALL - Earls unbeaten run ended by AFC Coventry Rangers

EARLSWOOD Town saw their 10-game unbeaten run come to an end after the Earls were beaten 4-2 by AFC Coventry Rangers.

James Wright and John Palmer struck for Earlswood in vain with Joe Gardener, George Swain, Connoll Farrell and Ryan Alexander all on target for the hosts at Coventry Tech Sporting Club.

The result means Earls sit sixth in the Midland Football League Division Two table.

And the hosts took the lead after just four minutes when Gardener slotted the ball home from close range.

Swain doubled Coventry’s lead on 22 minutes when his header slipped through the fingers of Earlswood goalkeeper Tom Day.

The visitors went close to reducing the deficit when Harry Street latched onto a through ball but was unable to lift the ball over the goalkeeper.

Earlswood responded when Wright tapped home from close range from Tom Kinsey’s pass.

However, Rangers restored their two-goal advantage before the break when a misjudged back pass from midfield played Farrell through who curled the ball around Day.

Dan Smith rattled the post for the Earls in the second half with a sweet half-volley before goalkeeper Day was forced off with a serious ankle injury which left Louis Bridges in between the sticks.

Bridges conceded just a single goal when a deflected shot found the net five minutes from time before Palmer scored a late consolation with a superb free-kick in the dying moments.

The Earls also handed a debut to experienced midfielder Ashley Weeks from the bench after he joined from divisional rivals Knowle.

The 31-year-old has spent the last five seasons with the Robins and made more than 80 appearances for the Solihull club.

Earlswood are next in action at home to Coventry Alvis on Saturday, November 12 with kick-off at 2pm at The Pavilions.
