Experienced coach David Gaves takes on Solihull role

TENNIS: INTERNATIONAL coach David Gaves will be passing on his coaching tips and advice to local players after joining the coaching team at Solihull Tennis Club.

Gaves has worked as a professional coach for over 25 years and has worked with a host of top players in Turkey at major tournaments throughout the world.

He will begin his new role at Marsh Lane this week and working alongside Jon Lawton, he will be in charge of overseeing the coaching programme and liaising with local schools.

The club has arranged for its members and prospective members to meet Gaves as part of a ‘Meet the Coaches’ event at the club’s six artificial grass courts this Saturday (March 4).

Gaves graduated in sports science at Brighton University and eventually moved to Muscat, Oman as head professional for the International Hotels Group at Abu Dhabi.

He returned to England at Westside Tennis Club in Wimbledon for a spell before landing one of his most successful roles coaching in Istanbul.

He said: “I worked with players at national levels in Turkey for eight years, and travelled the world by accompanying top internationals at major tournaments in a coaching capacity – including ten Grand Slams.

“I am delighted to be joining Solihull and plan to pass on my experience to all the club players – especially the techniques I practised in Turkey.”

Solihull Tennis Club ladies’ captain, Fiona Speak, added: “We expect a big turn out of members to meet our new coaches and we welcome anyone else thinking of getting back into tennis or starting out – adults and juniors alike.

“David and Jon will also be available to provide free coaching sessions on this day and answer any questions.”
