WARWICKSHIRE claimed their first County Championship win of the season with a dominant innings and 21-run victory against struggling Kent.

After bowling Kent out for 156, Warwickshire posted 420 in their first innings as Will Rhodes produced a stunning double century at Edgbaston.

And Oliver Hannon-Dalby then claimed six wickets in Kent’s second innings as the Bears bowled the visitors out for 243 to secure an emphatic victory.

Warwickshire won the toss and opted to bowl as Hannon-Dalby (3-31) took the wicket of Tawanda Muyeye (4) in the first over.

Hannon-Dalby struck again to remove Jack Leaning (8) after Chris Rushworth (3-43) accounted for Daniel Bell-Drummond (9) to leave Kent on 44-3.

Ben Compton (70) and Joey Evison (28) set about rebuilding the Kent innings with a 57-run fourth-wicket stand only for the Bears to take a flurry of wickets.

Ed Barnard (1-21) broke up the partnership with the wicket of Evison which led to a mini-collapse as Kent lost four wickets for the addition of just nine runs.

Booth (3-13) was next to strike as he accounted for Harry Finch (3) and then Grant Stewart (6) and Charlie Stobo (0) in the same over.

And Warwickshire cleaned up the tail to dismiss the visitors for just 156.

The Bears made a strong start to their innings as openers Rob Yates (40) and Alex Davies (37) scored quick runs.

Davies’ dismissal brought Rhodes (201) to the crease as the former Bears captain stole the show with 32 fours in a 295-ball innings.

Barnard (65) and Sam Hain (32) added useful runs as Warwickshire went into Kent’s second innings with a commanding 264-run lead.

And Hannon-Dalby (6-43) removed Compton (7) in the fourth over only for Kent to produce a 116-run second-wicket stand as Finch (38) and Bell-Drummond (78) looked to keep the visitors in the game.

However, Hannon-Dalby trapped Bell-Drummond LBW to break up the partnership and removed Finch soon after.

Evison (65) scored a fine half-century but struggled to build a solid partnership with Kent’s remaining batters.

Hannon-Dalby removed Muyeye (5) and Stobo (0) in consecutive balls having accounted for Leaning (19) a few overs previously.

Barnard (2-51) claimed the wickets of Stewart (3) and Matt Parkinson (0) in quick succession before Michael Rae (1-46) put the Bears on the brink of victory.

Evison eventually fell to the bowling of Booth (1-24) as the Bears sealed their first County Championship win of the season at the 11th attempt.

Warwickshire continue their County Championship campaign against rivals Worcestershire on Monday, September 9 with the game to begin at 10.30am at New Road.
