A TEAM of nimble-fingered pensioners have made more than 1,000 bobble hats for the top of innocent smoothie bottles to raise money Age UK.

Sandra Ward and the knit and natter club at Westhall Court in Yardley set out to make 100 of the hats which will adorn the smoothies, which will be sold in stores nationwide next year.

However, when the eight-strong group met their target they decided to double it then triple it and they kept on knitting and until they handed over the hats over to Age UK Solihull and the final count totted up to 1,152.

Speaking to the Observer Sandra said: “We never thought we’d get to 1,000, it was never in our sights.

“Making the hats didn’t stop when knit and natter stopped, some of the ladies would do a couple at home one week and bring them in and the next week and then there would be about 50 little hats that had been made at home – so they soon started adding up.

“Each hat didn’t take too long to make and as soon as someone got a pattern in their mind that was it, they were off.”

Now in its 14th year, The Big Knit will see innocent drinks committing to donate 25p per hat to the charity to help keep Silhillians warm during the winter months.

Following the success of 2016 Age UK Solihull is once again inviting supporters to knit or crochet the little bobble hats for the top of innocent smoothie bottle so it can reach a target of 4,000 hats.
