Westminster Diary: Community groups unite us all

Solihull Editorial 6th Sep, 2025   0

Community groups are the lifeblood of Hodge Hill and Solihull North, providing vital lifelines and compassion for our residents.

They hold individuals, families and communities together, propping them up, advocating on their behalf and bringing friendship.

Our community groups are nothing short of heroic. They run the sports teams, the toddler groups and the coffee mornings. These are the people who don’t just talk about community – they build it. Brick by brick. Act by act. Kindness by kindness.

Often – mostly – they do it on shoestring budgets, balancing jobs, families and volunteering.

They keep their programmes going not because it’s easy, but because they know their work matters, especially to those who need it most. I’m in awe of their determination and heart.

Take Cars Area Together. This incredible organisation runs stay-and-play groups; exercise and bingo sessions; employability skills programmes and much more, bringing together residents of all ages to make community life flourish.

Their ambition is equally inspiring – they’re set to deliver Solihull Council’s first-ever community asset transfer at Auckland Hall. This bold step will ensure the space is run by the community, for the community, for generations to come. I’ve been proud to back their vision, because when they succeed, the whole area benefits.

That’s why I want to make sure that no community group in our area ever feels alone.

One way we do that is through our annual Funders’ Fair which connects our brilliant local groups with the resources they need to grow. This year’s Funders’ Fair takes place on September 26, at Arden Hall, Water Orton Road, Castle Bromwich.

So, do you run a community group? Do you know someone who does? If so, please tell them about our Funders’ Fair!

We’ll have local and national funders giving practical tips on applying for grants and there’ll be information on the full range of funding streams available – and you’ll have the opportunity to network with other community champions who share your passion.

Attendance is free, but spaces are limited so please do book early. You can RSVP by emailing [email protected] or calling 0121 789 7287.

Strangers step up and hold us up and become friends. Community power is something we grow together, from the football pitch to the campaign meeting. It’s what makes our area more than just a collection of streets; it’s what makes us neighbours.

Community power is alive and well here in Solihull Find your funders. Fund your community.
