West Midlands mayor calls for diverse local leaders

WEST Midlands mayor Andy Street has called for more ‘inclusive leadership’ ahead of a conference in Solihull.

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), which the mayor chairs, will launch an ‘inclusive leadership pledge’, following a report calling for more diversity among regional leaders.

The authority’s Leadership Commission found that ‘ the region’s leadership does not reflect the diversity of our population.’

Mr Street is encouraging business leaders to join a pledge to increase diversity in their organisations.

He said more than 120 businesses and senior leaders have signed up already.

The authority’s pledge “asks organisations and senior leaders to commit to promoting diversity and embedding inclusion. It is deliberately flexible so that signatories can tailor their pledges to the specific strengths and challenges of their organisation.

“The aim is to build a movement for inclusive leadership: spreading the message of why diversity and inclusion matters, sharing success stories and supporting change.”

The mayor will host a free conference at Voco St Johns, 651 Warwick Rd, Solihull, 8am – 9.30am on October 22.
