REPRESENTATIVES of housing authorities from across the county are meeting at West Midlands Fire Service’s head offices to review the tragic incident in London.

Phil Loach, the chief fire officer for West Midlands Fire Service, said he wanted to reassure people living or working in high-rise buildings.

He said: “I’d like to reassure people here in the West Midlands that we are already in a very strong position, as a result of our prevention and protection work and our ability to respond.

“Given the significance of the London fire, I want to give further reassurance that we have initiated some immediate actions. Today we are meeting with partners from our seven local authority areas to confirm that existing plans are the best that they can be.

“Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy. I am as shocked and surprised as anyone to see that such a fire could take place.

“I also want to express our respect for how London Fire Brigade and other emergency responders have dealt, and continue to deal, with the incident.”

He added the incident will have far-reaching consequences and implications for how fire and rescue services prepare for such a terrible event in the future.

Mr Loach also said the West Midlands Fire Service has strong and robust arrangements to manage different types of risk – which focus on protecting people and buildings and the emergency responses by emergency services.

He concluded by saying the service is very mindful that the impact of the Grenfell Tower incident will be profound, but there will be lessons which will allow emergency services to adapt its policies and procedures.
