AN OLTON man has been killed in a hit-and-run crash during rush hour yesterday (Monday, July 16) evening.

The 46-year-old, was killed when what’s thought to be a black VW Golf left the road and hit him as he walked on the pavement.

The driver didn’t stop at the scene and it is believed the car drove off towards Acocks Green.

Warwick Road between Old Warwick Road and Richmond Road remain closed today (Tuesday 17 July) as officers investigate the death.

Closures remain in place until with drivers and pedestrians being urged to avoid the area and leave plenty of time for their journey.

The closure of the stretch of road into and out of Birmingham will have a significant impact on commuters but is essential to help police find those responsible says detectives.

Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield said: “Closing the road in both directions is an extreme measure but a necessary one as we conduct fingertip searches and carry out other enquiries for vital clues. We need to understand how and why the car left the road, and why the driver didn’t stop.

“We will reopen the road as soon as we can, but ask for people’s understanding during this difficult time for the man’s family and friends.”

Anyone who saw the collision or saw a dark VW Golf in the area after the incident – which happened shortly before 5pm – should call police on 101.
