Wardens measuring the value of Solihull's trees

SOLIHULL Tree Wardens have been given tools to help measure the environmental benefits and values of the local trees.

The volunteer Tree Warden team protect trees within the borough and safeguard the our environment and heritage for Solihull’s future generations.

Members are working with Solihull Council’s Planting Our Future team and idverde UK to protect and promote trees in parks and green spaces around the borough.

Solihull Tree Wardens’ latest project involves measuring the environmental benefits and values of local trees.

To support this project, idverde have donated kit bags to the Solihull Tree Wardens including a special diameter tape to measure the circumference of a tree.

This means they can measure the value of a tree as well as its age.

The data they collect will tell them how much carbon our trees are capturing and storing, how trees improve the air quality and the flood risk mitigation they provide. Additionally, the data will provide an insight into the value of these services in economic terms.

Councillor Ken Hawkins, cabinet portfolio member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “We’re delighted to support the Tree Wardens in protecting and promoting our wonderful variety of local trees in Solihull. Their work ensures that we know the true value of our trees and that we can continue to plant our future.”

The Tree Wardens are also involved in planting, pruning, and watering care for local trees, organising tree walks and monitoring tree welfare.

Andrew Baber, contract manager for idverde, said: “We are lucky to have such dedicated and passionate Tree Wardens in Solihull, and we are so pleased to be supporting them in their work with our tree packs.”
