Veterans honoured at Knowle Remembrance Sunday parade

Solihull Editorial 15th Nov, 2023   0

HUNDREDS braved the rain and cold to honour the fallen at the Knowle Remembrance Sunday parade and service.

Local dignitaries including members of the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides, Cubs and Beavers, and veterans and serving personnel laid wreaths during the service.

The parade was led through the village streets by the Band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Among them were Second World War veterans including 97-year-old Prince Albert Jacob – ‘Jake’ – who joined the parade in poppy-decorated Range Rovers provided by Jaguar Land Rover.

Jake was presented with his medals for his valiant part in the Second World War – 78 years after the war ended.

He was just 17 when he left his home in Trinidad and signed up to fight for the British military as the threat of the Germans loomed.

Hassan Ashraf of Knowle and Dorridge Round Table said: “I wanted to get Jake on board after reading his story.

“With only a week to spare, I finally got his contact details, spoke with him and invited him and a guest to join us on the day.

“John Berry from Knowle Royal British Legion (RBL) had another veteran he knew that we invited and it went from there.

“Before you know it, we had a number of veterans, mostly in their late 90s, whom we invited to spend some time with us on the day.

“We picked them up from their homes in the JLR provided Range Rovers and chauffeured them throughout the parade and church service, spending some time with them in the RBL afterwards.”
