A SOLIHULL volunteer with ‘one of the bravest most selfless souls on the planet’ has been killed in Ukraine, according to his family.

Samuel Newey had travelled to the country to fight just after his 21st birthday.

The 22-year-old’s brother, Dan Newey, posted on Facebook that Samuel was killed in action on Wednesday August 31.

He wrote: “I cannot put into words how broken I feel. I also cannot emphasise how proud I am of my little brother.

“He’d just turned 21 when he decided to answer the call and travel to Ukraine to push back against Russian imperialism.

“Sam you gave your life for people you never knew and acted with courage, morality and honour.

“Not only are you my little brother, but you’re an exceptional man, a good soldier and one of the bravest people I ever had the privilege of knowing.”

Samuel is believed to be the 10th British person to die in the conflict.

His mum, Vikki Downes, paid tribute to her son on Facebook. She said: “My beautiful brave warrior who travelled to war, and fought for those who needed help; gave the ultimate sacrifice.

“In your 22 years, you lived a full life. Drove us crazy at times. You are and will always be loved and missed.

“One of the bravest most selfless souls on the planet. Good night my baby boy. We will catch up in the next world.”

His family have set up a fundraising page to help bring his body home and to help with funeral costs.

In just three days kind-hearted friends, family and supporters had raised more than £22,500.

On the Just Giving site the family said: “Without fear he embarked on a journey of battle, courage and tenacity. Most people would have crumbled. Not Sam, he undertook mission after mission with the utmost bravery.

“One of the most selfless acts a human can do. Fighting in a foreign country, for people he had never met, without question and never faltering.

“He gave his life for people he didn’t know. He acted with courage, morality and honour.

“We would like Sam’s last journey on this planet to be a memorable one. Befitting of a young selfless warrior, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for leaving the comfort of his country, to fight against those who threatened the lives and peace of others.”
