TK Maxx closes Mell Square store

Solihull Editorial 26th Mar, 2024   0

A POPULAR high street shop has closed its Solihull store.

Shoppers were left confused when TK Maxx in Mell Square didn’t open in February despite basket being piled high by the door and rails filled with clothes filling the store.

At first the high street giant said the store was closed temporarily for maintenance – but it has since confirmed this will be a permanent closure and have ended the lease on the store.

A Solihull Council spokesperson said: “While this decision will be disappointing to many Solihull shoppers, TK Maxx, along with its sister store Homesense, will continue trading from their larger Shirley store at Sears retail park.

“With a bold new town centre masterplan in place, Solihull presents a range of commercial and residential development opportunities underpinned by the significant investments in public realm and transport infrastructure that the Council has planned.

“Our masterplan provides a framework for future growth and development into the next decade and builds on Solihull’s proven track record of attracting high quality occupiers and investment.

“There are significant development opportunities identified at Mell Square to enhance and re-energise the current retail offer by bringing in new complementary uses such as residential and a more varied leisure offer.

“Solihull Council is taking a hands-on approach to ensure we are not just responsive to these changes but can get ahead of the curve and capitalise on the opportunities this presents. The plan has always been to bring this scheme forward in stages to align with when sites become available, as in this instance.

“In the meantime, our property agents will continue to explore options for alternative temporary uses for the premises ahead of redevelopment which is likely to commence in late 2025.”
