Things are heating up for Solihull town centre’s low carbon energy network

Solihull Editorial 3rd Aug, 2024   0

PLANS to bring a new source of low carbon heating to Solihull town centre are coming to life after the borough council partnered with Vital Energi to deliver its low carbon energy network.

The new network will generate low carbon heat and power from a single energy centre and distribute it through underground pipes and cables.

This scheme is part of a wider plan the council has developed to lower the carbon emissions over the next 20 years.

Vital Energy will take the project forward by building, operating, and maintaining this new network.

The first phase will provide heat and power to public and private sector customers, including in council owned buildings and education campuses.

It is also intended the future phases will then connect other buildings in the town centre and link to planned commercial or residential developments in line with the council’s town centre master plan.

Work is set to get started later this summer and first phase customers could be hooked up and start benefiting from the network as early as next year.

Coun Andy Mackiewicz said: “A huge amount of hard work has already gone into developing this project and – with Vital’s help – we can finally get it over the line and bring the benefits of affordable, reliable low carbon energy to Solihull town centre customers, while contributing to an overall reduction in the borough’s carbon emissions.”

Gemma Dyson, pre-construction director at Vital Energy, said:”We’re delighted to be partnering with Solihull Council to deliver this low carbon energy network.”
