The Core theatre set to reopen after RAAC closure

Solihull Editorial 16th May, 2024   0

MUSICALS, dance shows and plays are set to return to the Core Theatre next spring.

Solihull Council has announced the reopening of the auditorium after results from the work completed to date indicate that the auditorium roof should be able to undergo remediation works.

A full programme of works is being developed and will commence shortly.

The aim is that by April 2025 the auditorium will be hosting shows, performances and film screenings, followed by a full theatre programme from September 2025.

Councillor Wasma Qais, cabinet member for Communities, said: “It is really positive news that our auditorium will be back in business next year.

“We now know the work that needs doing and while the theatre is closed, we will take the opportunity to schedule in some other valuable improvement works and equipment upgrades.

“We have built in some contingency planning into the programme from April which will allow some flexibility.

“By bringing back films, National Theatre Live and one-night performances first, we can have a ‘soft’ opening in the spring. We can then welcome back a full theatre programme from September 2025 and the pantomime in December.

“We are working closely with theatre user groups as we recognise the hard work, love and dedication they put into their performances. These productions require an awful lot of planning and preparation work, and we are working with them regarding their return.”

In September Solihull Council was forced to close The Core’s doors after reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which is prone to collapse, was identified at the theatre following a routine inspection last year.

Further investigations at the auditorium and stage roof indicated further work needed to take place before the venue could reopen.

Several of the shows, including the borough’s much-loved pantomime, were moved to The Artrix in Bromsgrove.

The rest of The Core building has been open throughout and a programme of shows, events and activities will continue to be hosted in the Studio theatre, Courtyard Gallery, Encore Café Bar, Core Creatives, Solihull Connect and The Core Library.
