A TALENTED Solihull athlete hopped, stepped and jumped his way to gold at the UK Athletics’ Youth Development League (YDL) finals.

Sean Mhende won the under-20s triple jump final, achieving a personal best of 13.96m at the same time.

But the 17-year-old’s success did not stop there, as he and his team mates from Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club romped home in the silver medal position in the 4x100m under-20 men’s relay race at the finals, which took place in the Regional Sports Arena in Manchester.

These were not the only accolades the Solihull School sixth former has recently achieved, as he was also presented with a trophy by his athletics club at a recent awards evening for his hard work, achievements and commitment to the club.

Sean said: “I was elated at achieving gold. I have worked really hard towards this after a difficult season of injuries.

“To be able to perform at that level on the day was all I could ask of myself and I am so grateful for the support of my coaches, my parents and Solihull School.”

Sean’s next sporting challenge is competing in the English Athletics Championships at the beginning of next year.

Steven Thompson, Solihull School’s director of sport, said: “Sean has exceptional athletic talent and an extremely positive attitude.

“We are delighted, but not surprised, by how well he did in the YDL finals and being presented with the trophy from his club.

“Not only has Sean got natural athletic ability, he is also extremely hard working and completely dedicated.

“Everyone at Solihull School is so proud of his well-earned success.”

The YDL aims to build the future of British athletics by developing and nurturing young talent.

It was formed in 2013 through an amalgamation of the National Junior Athletic League and the National Youth Athletics League.
