Support group for new mums in Solihull handed funds for coffee and craft sessions

NEW MUMS and their little ones can get covered in paint and get support over a hot cuppa thanks to a new baby group in Solihull.

Happy Mamas has been given £2,000 for its Coffee and Craft session at Brueton Park’s Parkridge Centre on Monday mornings from the Solihull Winter Wellbeing and Recovery Fund.

Jemma, who runs the sessions with Jenny Cole and seven volunteers, has used the money to pay for equipment and craft activities as well as room hire.

She said: “The craft session offers mums a place to talk and share experiences whilst having a hot drink and completing a simple craft activity.

“Babies and children are welcome to come along and occupy themselves with toys provided.

“The funding has given us the confidence to extend our offering to new mums, who often don’t get much support.

“Up to that point, I had been funding the group by myself.”

Happy Mamas was set up in January 2020 after mum of two Jemma wanted to create a space where women with children up to five years old can be honest and open about their experiences.

She said: “There seems to be lots of classes and support out there for babies and children, but there really isn’t much for new mums from where they are signed off by their midwife to their children starting school.

“By talking and listening to others, it can help mums feel they are not alone in how they feel.

“Mums may feel ‘Mum guilt’ about a particular issue or feel they’re failing or not doing ‘enough’.

“Being with other mums who ‘get it’ and are in a similar phase of life can be really helpful.”

Happy Mamas also has a weekly walk around the park every Friday morning.

For more or to book a space at one of the session visit or the Happy Mamas Facebook page.
