A SOLIHULL student and budding sportsman has been presented with a coveted award by Lord Mayor of Birmingham.

Harjan Gahir, who lives on Station Road, was one of a select group of students nominated by teachers for his achievements and praised for his success during the celebrations held at the Priory Rooms in Birmingham.

The 18-year-old Abbey College Birmingham student was presented with his award by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Raymond Hassall for achieving the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year Award.

Accepting his award, Harjan, a Lower Sixth mathematics, chemistry and physics student said: “I have worked really hard this year and I am really proud to be given this award.

“It was a great event and I loved sharing it with all of my classmates.”

Congratulating the teenager on his award, Abbey College principal Gary Wright added: “Harjan is an excellent athlete and always shows his dedication during his Physical Education classes.

“He acts as a motivator with his fellow students and champions the importance of physical activity.

“The end of year awards ceremony was an excellent way to show students that we recognise their hard work.

“It was a fantastic event which is testimony to the fact that Abbey College produces confident, articulate, outgoing students with excellent achievements which make them sought after by the top universities.

“I also pay tribute to the teaching staff for their care and commitment in assisting the students to achieve these remarkable awards.”
