Storm Darragh wreaks havoc in Solihull

Solihull Editorial 9th Dec, 2024   0

STORM Darragh left a path of destruction as rain and high winds battered the borough over the weekend.

A Yellow weather warning was in place as gusts reached around 60miles per hour.

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) was called out to Lode Lane in Solihull after a 999 call at 3.41pm on Saturday (December 7) following reports that a tree had fallen onto two cars.

A paramedic and two ambulances were sent to the scene where two patients were assessed – one was discharged on scene and a man was taken to Heartlands Hospital for further checks.

Solihull Council and Emergency Forestry crews from Veolia, the Council’s environmental partner, have been working tirelessly through driving wind and rain to address the widespread impact caused by Storm Darragh.

Crews have been on the ground since the storm began, responding to incidents and prioritising public safety.

Efforts continued on Monday (December 9) as teams worked to clear fallen trees, blocked pathways and roadways, and manage other storm-related damage.

Each reported issue is being prioritised, and the Council is asking for patience as teams respond as quickly as possible.

Solihull Council’s cabinet member for Environment and Infrastructure, Councillor Ken Hawkins, said: “Our teams are doing their very best to get through all logged calls as quickly as possible. We ask for your patience as we process these incidents. If you have logged a call, it is being dealt with.

“Clean-up activities are already underway, focusing first on clearing public highways and roads. Work will extend to parks and other public spaces as teams progress through the most urgent cases.

“I want to reassure residents that while it may take time to respond to all calls, every effort is being made to ensure public safety and restore normal conditions across the borough.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these challenges together.”

Silhillians are being asked to call 0121 704 8000 if they see a branch split and at risk of falling, trees obstructing a path or roadway or a tree on Solihull Council-owned land posing an immediate danger or health and safety risk.
