Solihull's supreme quiz master breaks another fundraising record

SOLIHULL’S supreme award-winning charity worker, has chalked up another record thanks to supporters of her acclaimed quiz raising a mammoth £23,861 from entry fees and donations.

And the total amount Joyce Rothschild has raised in 27-years has now reached a towering £275,058 with Macmillan Cancer Support being chosen once again as this year’s beneficiary.

Joyce said: “Every year we have improved on previous results and to do so again in what seemed like being a difficult time for another record sum was exceptional.

“It showed how many people continue to enjoy taking part in the quiz. Some of the entries come from loyal supporters living abroad. I thank them all for the results we achieve”.

Joyce began her fund-boosting campaign after recovering from breast cancer when she was 40 and has continued to provide the financial aid to benefit the needs of cancer patients.

All the money comes from entry fees and donations made by the many people who readily take up the challenge set by Joyce, her husband, Mark and school friend Jasmi Roberts.

They compile and set the 100 questions for the quiz, each with a different theme every year.

Joyce, who was awarded a British Empire Medal for her charitable work, said: ”Every year we think we will just do one more because it is a huge amount of work but we are definitely planning one for next year.”

For the first three years Joyce gave the Queen Elizabeth Hospital all of the proceeds as a thank you for the treatment that enabled her to recover from breast cancer.

Since then, Macmillan Cancer Support has been the sole beneficiary.

Megan Hayman Tansley, the Macmillan Cancer Support fund-raising manager in the West Midlands, said: “Joyce is one of our most valued supporters.

“Without fund-raisers like her, Yasmi and the many who enter the quiz.

“We wouldn’t be able to reach the growing number of people who need our support and enable us to continue helping those living with cancer.”
