A LOCAL volunteer has won a prestigious national broadcast award for her work at BHBN, the Birmingham-based hospital radio station.

Solihull resident Emma Boydell was handed the accolade for took the Silver Award for Best Newcomer for her two-hour show, Let’s Get Quizzical at the annual Hospital Broadcast Awards.

The awards celebrate hospital radio presenters and stations for the work they do to entertain patients in hospitals across the country.

Speaking about her win Emma said: “It was great to be part of the awards ceremony and to have a contingency representing BHBN at the gala event and when my name was announced, I couldn’t quite believe it.

“It was a very glitzy event and we’re all so proud at BHBN that we were able to bring an award home.”

The 38-year-old started as a volunteer at BHBN in October 2015 gathering and presenting musical requests from patients at Solihull Hospital.

With her background in TV broadcasting, she soon earned her own two hour weekly slot presenting the ‘Let’s Get Quizzical’ show, where she poses questions about every song she plays.

BHBN broadcasts to Solihull, Queen Elizabeth, Good Hope, Women’s, Heartlands and the Birmingham Skin and Neurology Hospitals from studios in a transformed operating theatre in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Heritage Building.

Founded in 1953 by former Birmingham Lord Mayor Freda Cocks OBE, and is now one of the longest running Hospital Radio stations in the UK.

Patients can tune in free, 24 hours a day and listen to shows from over twenty-five volunteer presenters via their bedside entertainment units or at home.
