The director of Public Health at Solihull Council, took on the 26.2-mile course around The Big Apple to fundraise for Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s (BSMHFT) charity, Caring Minds.

Caring Minds that supports BSMHFT’s vision of improving mental health wellbeing by providing added extras for staff and vulnerable people that are over and above what the NHS can provide.

Facing conditions of 80 per cent humidity, Ruth ran the gruelling marathon covering Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Harlem and finishing in Central Park.

So far, Ruth has fundraised over £1,500 for Caring Minds, all proceeds will go towards the Solihull Integrated Addictions Service (SIAS).

Commissioned by Solihull Council, SIAS is a partnership of organisations including BSMHFT, who work with Solihillians who are struggling with alcohol, drug or gambling addiction get the support they need.

On average, the service supports 980 adults and 50 young people suffering from addiction in the area each year.

Ruth said: “The support SIAS gives to Solihull residents is invaluable and I wanted to show my gratitude to the team for all the work they do.

“Thinking about the people SIAS supports and the tough path they are on helped motivate me to cross the finish line.

“I would like to thank everyone who’s donated so generously so far. The money raised will help Caring Minds Charity to fund added extras that will only enhance the excellent service at SIAS.”
