A SOLIHULL charity has been recognised for setting the wheels in motion for all who dream of cycling.
Solihull Wheels for All – a project which provides inclusive cycling for everyone including those with restricted mobility – received the Highly Commended achievement in the Outstanding Community Project category of Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions Awards 2026.
The charity was awarded Community Champion status last year when leisure operator Everyone Active, which runs Tudor Grange Leisure Centre and North Solihull Sports Centre in partnership with Solihull Council, launched the Community Champions scheme to support projects which are tackling local issues and changing lives.
Solihull Wheels For All secured use of facilities at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre as part of the initiative to help carry out its work.
The project also works with organisations supporting people with specific needs, such as day centres, community care groups and local special needs schools.
Alan Thomson, a trustee at Solihull Wheels for All said: “Over the years we’ve built up a large fleet of adapted cycles and people who can pedal, pedal and people who can’t use the hand propelled machines.
“We’ve got equipment like the rickshaw where people who are very nervous can sit alongside a carer and be cycled round by others. We also have side by side tandems where you sit alongside someone – very often it is somebody they know rather than just some stranger that jumps in and starts peddling with them.”
The charity offers support to day care projects across the borough, including Rose Cottage Care Farm.
Lorraine Walker, carer at Rose Cottage Care Farm, said: “I think it’s good for [people’s] mental health. It brings out enjoyment and being in the fresh air together just makes you feel happier.
“The people we care for and the carers all benefit together. We have a good chat while we’re going round and a laugh.”
Everyone Active has launched its Community Champions scheme for 2026-27, which celebrates unsung heroes making a difference in Solihull with the aim of building stronger communities and recognising the dedication of those who go above and beyond.
Those involved in mentoring, promoting health and wellbeing, supporting inclusivity or leading environmental or cultural projects are urged to apply.
It can be a charitable initiative or a project that is small or targeted.
Applications for the Community Champion scheme run until March 20.
