Solihull Volunteers clean up Greenhill Way care home garden

A CARE home garden has been transformed into an oasis thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

Green-fingered residents from the community joined forces with Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club, Shirley Neighbourhood Police Team, Greenhill Way Street Association, Solihull Council, Solihull Community Housing and local Councillors to spruce up the gardens of Greenhill Way care home.

Volunteers cut back shrubs and bushes to smarten up the garden, created a vegetable patch for residents to grow their own food, and built a paved area complete with table, chairs a brand new barbeque.

The Mayor of Solihull, Coun Mike Robinson, opened the garden.

He said: “The transformation of this garden is quite remarkable and is a testament to the hard work of the community volunteers involved.

“I am sure that the residents are very appreciative of their efforts and will enjoy having a beautiful outdoor space to make the most of.”

Work began to clean up the garden in July and it was opened earlier this month.

Councillor Karen Grinsell, cabinet member for adult social care and health, added: “I’m delighted that the community has come together to help out our elderly residents.

“I have no doubt that the residents will take full advantage of this beautiful garden and maybe even dine al fresco next summer with some of the food they have grown themselves

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everybody who gave up their time and got stuck in with the garden makeover; the end result is brilliant and couldn’t have been achieved without them.”

The Greenhill Way Extra Care scheme provides 24/7 support to allow those who wish to live independently to do so, safe in the knowledge that care is available if required.
