AUDIENCES in Solihull will be transported back to ancient Egypt when a hit musical comes to the stage next month.

Award-winning Solihull Theatre Company is gearing up to perform Aida at The Core Theatre in Solihull from Tuesday May 9 until Saturday, May 13.

Written by Elton John and Tim Rice and featuring everything from haunting ballads to reggae numbers and rousing gospel anthems, the musical adaptation of Verdi’s opera tells an epic tale of love, loyalty, and betrayal.

Nubian princess Aida (Charley Branson) is captured by the Egyptians and given to their prince Radames (Dan Gough) as a slave. The prince is unaware of her royal status across the river and in spite of the fact their nations are at war the two fall in love. But Radames is betrothed to the Egyptian princess Amneris (Kara Robinson) and his cruel father Zoser (Steve Hayes) has an evil plot to dethrone the Pharaoh (Jon Sheridan) and put Radames on the throne.

Director Terry Wheddon said: “This is a fantastic show which takes Verdi’s classic opera and turns it into a thrilling modern musical.

“Elton John and Tim Rice’s influence is unmistakeable throughout and this is one of the great modern musical soundtracks with some songs that really will bring the house down in an absorbing tale of forbidden love in the midst of war.

“Rehearsals have been going brilliantly and we have a very talented cast and company ready to take audiences at The Core back to ancient Egypt to witness a cracking tale with something for everyone.”

Aida runs from Tuesday, May 9 until Saturday, May 13 with a Saturday matinee. Tickets are available from www.thecoretheatresolihull.co.uk or by calling the box office on 0121 704 6962.
