STUDENTS saw their films on the silver screen at Solihull’s Short is Beautiful Film Festival.

Film and Media learners from Solihull Sixth Form College attended the third annual festival at The Core Theatre, organised by Solihull Council and Culture Solihull.

The event aims to nurture emerging and established filmmakers across the Midlands as part of an ongoing programme supporting artists and creatives.

A trio of students represented the College, screening their short films before a panel of industry professionals, including Becky Rooney (founder of Rooscreen and Film Friendly), Phillip Ray Tommy (actor, writer, filmmaker and stunt performer), Nicola Prestage (independent filmmaker) and Tommy Reade (documentary filmmaker and co-founder of IMA).

The films featured were Mending a Broken Heart by Ben Carter, The Woodcutter’s Tale by El Longley and The Price of Becoming by Asher Javier.

Student Ben Carter said: “Watching my own film on the big screen and receiving a round of applause, as well as professional feedback, was such a surreal feeling.

“Speaking to the industry professionals offered insights into networking and the next steps for after college. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and have gained a more solidified perspective on my future.”

In addition to the screenings, the festival included an industry panel discussion, offering practical advice and sharing real-world experiences of careers in film and media.

Attendees had the chance to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities within the screen sector.
