Solihull students gain first aid qualification

BIG-HEARTED learners from Solihull Sixth Form College took part in a full-day First Aid course this week, as staff from Safe Haven Training came onto campus.

23 learners took part in the training, delivered by Mohammed and Richard from Safe Haven Training.

Most were students who have chosen to join the First Aid Society enrichment and all the learners possessed a desire to help others and learn life-saving skills.

Among the skills they learnt were cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), how to put someone in the recovery position and how to treats cuts and sprains. Learners took a short assessment at the end of the course in order to gain a First Aid qualification.

Megan Eyers, a Student Welfare Adviser and First Aider at the College, said: “We are grateful to Mohammed and Richard for coming into College to deliver this training. These are valuable life skills and all the learners who have attained this qualification now have skills that could be used to save someone’s life in future.”

The First Aid Society is one of many enrichment opportunities available at the College.

These activities take place alongside a learners’ main programme of study and are intended to help them to develop skills that stand them in good stead for the future, including boosting their progression chances at university, further training or employment.

Other related enrichments include the Student Health Ambassadors Scheme, which sees learners delivering healthy living messages to their peers.
