Solihull student sets his sights on Abbey Road

A SOLIHULL student will be aiming to replicate the Beatles’ famous Abbey Road Studios pose when taking part in a new primetime television series.

Tom Carson will hit the screens of Sky One every Friday evening as part of the channel’s latest programme ‘Sing: Ultimate A Cappella’.

The programme aims to discover the country’s best vocal group, and Tom – with the help of his band Illuminations – is in the running to win the competition – which would see him record an album at the Abbey Road venue.

Hosted by Cat Deeley, the series was recorded in London and is billed as the UK’s first vocals-only entertainment competition with no backing tracks or instruments.

Tom’s group is made up of students from the University of Exeter.

Boasting 14 varying voices, the group are known in Devon for their sound effects – including beatboxing, animal noises, and sirens.

They regularly perform in Exeter city centre and have only been competing in ‘a cappella’ competitions for the past two years.

Tom, who is studying Philosophy and Sociology, said: “Being part of the programme has to be one of the scariest, but most exciting things I’ve done.

“It is always strange meeting celebrities but to be treated like one is even funnier.

“It was a small change from the Solihull School stage, but nothing could have set me up better for such an experience better.”

During each episode, the groups will be judged on their vocals, musicality, interpretation and performance.

Groups will perform a medley of two songs in round one before performing a hit from a musical item.

Contestants are gradually eliminated before the grand final.
