Solihull student earns choreography commission with Worcester Theatre

A DANCER from Solihull studying a dance and performance degree will perform a duet after she and a fellow student secured a prestigious commission, writes Maya Dabrowska.

Ruby Brown, 18, will be joined by 19-year-old Maisey Tromans to co-produce and perform the contemporary dance next month.

The pair are in the first year of their course at the University of Worcester.

The degree contains a Choreographic Practices module which as the commissioners for this year, Worcester’s Swan

Theatre invited students to create a piece reflecting the history of dance, with selected works performed on stage.

Ruby and Maisey were offered a commission after performing to theatre representatives and the pair are now refining the piece, entitled ‘Echo in the Shadows’.

Ruby has been dancing since the age of eight and excels in lyrical and contemporary dance.

She developed a love for choreography during college.

Ruby said: “I feel very happy about being commissioned for this piece as it’s such a wonderful opportunity – this will help me in the future, as I want to be a teacher in dance, which means coming up with choreography will be needed for the end goals.

“Doing this has really boosted my confidence and motivation to really go for it.”

Dancing since age three, Maisey has studied performing arts at Birmingham Ormiston Academy and has attended KLM School of Dance for the past four years, developing into becoming a qualified teacher.

In 2024, she was one of 100 dancers chosen for the English Youth Ballet’s production of ‘Giselle’.

After developing a love for choreography Maisey said: “For me there’s no better feeling than seeing what started out as a small initial idea being made better than you ever thought possible by those who perform your work.”

Dr Paul Goz, course leader and senior lecturer for dance and performance, recognises the difficulty of securing such competitive paid choreography work as emerging artists and describes the commission as ‘an incredible testament to their creativity, hard work and professionalism’.
