Solihull stepathon raises funds for children charities

A TOTAL of £150 was raised for children’s charity Together For Short Lives and Acorns Children’s Hospice when a stepathon was held in Acocks Green.

The area’s Morrisons teamed up with Fox Hollies Leisure Centre’s instructors and membership consultant Dawn Jones.

Around 120 people took part in excercise classes, along with the instructors, with a view to reaching a combined 99,000-step total.

They smashed that, notching up 124,000 between them.

One of the members – James Jones – had donated £50.

Morrisons’ community champion Danielle Barker said: “It meant a lot to him as he had a young relative who had been poorly and had a lot of support from the children’s charity.”

Danielle had set up a refreshments table – also to raise cash – and families and children who were coming out of the leisure centre after swimming lessons gave generously in return for fruit, other healthy snacks and drinks.

Jo Thomas from Acorns in Selly Oak also came along and helped on the day.

Danielle added: “Dawn worked hard jumping from class to class to do her steps – I don’t know where she found the energy to do it.

“Everybody recorded their steps on Fitbits and activity trackers and all the totals were put together at the end.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part.”
