AN INSPIRATIONAL Solihull athlete has been selected to represent Team Great Britain at the World Transplant Games 2025 in Dresden, Germany.

Jo Kelly, a stem cell transplant recipient, was inspired to take up track cycling in 2012 after watching the London Olympics while she was having her transplant as part of her treatment for terminal cancer.

The 39-year-old said she became obsessed with the event was would be found on a pedal machine in the isolation room, and swore that if she survived her transplant, she would learn to ride on the velodrome.

Since then Jo has participated in numerous endurance events, raising over £12,000 for various charities.

Her dedication led to victories in the women’s road race at the British Transplant Games in both 2023 and 2024, securing her place on Team GB for the upcoming World Transplant Games.

The data engineer said: “I am thrilled to have made the Team GB transplant team; it’s such a big opportunity to get out there and increase awareness of organ and stem cell donation.”

The Games will also be an emotional reunion for Jo and her German stem cell donor, Stefan.

The two met for the first time in 2020 after Jo made contact through the Anthony Nolan charity.

Their emotional meeting was televised on BBC Breakfast, capturing a powerful story of survival and generosity.

Since then, Jo and Stefan have remained close, continuing to support Anthony Nolan as guest speakers to raise awareness about stem cell donation.

With the World Transplant Games being held in Germany, Jo and Stefan plan to meet again, celebrating the gift of life that Stefan gave her over a decade ago.

The Games are self-funded, and Jo is seeking support to cover competition costs.

She said: “Although I will cover as much of this myself, I’m going to need a boost.

“My target will help cover the cost of competing, and hopefully coaching and kit. I am going to work HARD for your support, not only on the bike but with the many fundraising ideas I have to generate some cash.

“Every contribution brings me closer to making this journey possible. Meeting Stefan again will be the cherry on top.”

Leading up to the World Transplant Games 2025 Jo will be taking part in a number of events including the Stratford Triathlon on April 13.
