A FRIENDLY war of words took place when young people gathered to compete at the annual Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks competition.

A total of six teams from three schools came together at the RBL Club in Union Road to present their debates with very challenging subjects.

The Rotary Club of Solihull St Alphege welcomed teams from St Peter’s Catholic Sixth Form, Solihull School and King Edward VI Girls from Handsworth to discuss a variety of topics from should video games be banned to should mobile phones be considered a human right.

The Judges came from Heart of England Toastmasters and were tasked with the job of deciding who came out on top.

The winning debate was This House believes the Monarchy should be Abolished given by Daisy Janelle and Erin of St Peter’s Catholic Sixth Form.

The duo are set to go on to compete in the Rotary District Final at Bishop Ullathorpe School in Coventry next month.

Organiser Peter Sunderland said “Participants can select a topic that is important to them, allowing them to delve deep into research, formulate ideas, and expand their knowledge.

“Taking part helps build self-confidence and develop public speaking skills, including how to keep an audience engaged.”
