A SOLIHULL schoolboy has reached the final of the 2016 Match Attax World Championship, and will attempt to win the tournament at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Ben Thompson has been playing the card trading game for over four years and could be crowned champion of the world after being crowned the regional finalist at Villa Park on Thursday (April 7).

The 11-year-old will now be pitted against other regional winners and play the stat-based trading card game in front of thousands of people before Chelsea take on Leicester this Sunday (May 15).

The Solihull school student said: “I’m really pleased to be a Match Attax World Championship regional finalist for Birmingham.

“I love collecting the cards and play the game almost every day.

“I’m really excited for the final, it’s a great excuse to play the game even more now so I can practice.”

Ben’s day at Villa Park was topped off when world record football freestyler Dan Magness made a special appearance with more Match Attax card to complete his already strong collection.

Rod Pearson from Topps – the makers of Match Attax – said: “It was great to see so many people at the swap and play event in Birmingham.

“We’d just like to say a huge congratulations to Ben for becoming a regional finalist in the Match Attax World Championships and wish him the best of luck for the Grand Final.

“Ben will be battling it out against some tough competitors from all across the world in the final, including collectors from the UK, Ireland, Singapore and South Africa – it promises to be a great contest.”
