THERE was double delight for a Solihull marathon runner – not only did he complete the London marathon but he also smashed a world record.
Dan Hudson completed the 26.2mile course in 3hours 35minutes and 51seconds dressed as a microphone – beating the previous record by almost 40minutes.
He took on the iconic marathon in memory of his mum Gill, in aid of Marie Curie.
Dan decided to dress up for his latest venture and take on the record attempt for ‘fastest marathon dressed as a microphone’ for a number of reasons.
Chief among them was to offering a voice to the victims, and their families, of disgraced breast surgeon Ian Paterson.
Gill was was one of the 64 women who received treatment from criminal surgeon Ian Paterson and there’s an ongoing coroner’s case at Birmingham Crown Court, during which time he could be released from prison for previous crimes.
Dan says this could be before victims and their families get a chance to be heard so he dressed up as ‘a reminder that these families have a right to be heard’.
Dan said the microphone will also be used as a symbol to amplify the work Marie Curie do and provided for his late mum and to represent his job as a podcaster.
Speaking after the race Dan told the Observer: “It feels incredible to hold the world record.
“I thought it was going to be tight to beat the existing record of 4hours 15minutes but in the end I knocked 39 minutes off which was totally unexpected.
“Completing was amazing in retrospect but actually crossing the finish line was quite stressful – I immediately got pulled into a tv interview and I had really bad cramp and pains so I had to just lie down for about half an hour writhing around in pain.
“It took me about an hour to recompose myself.”
At Sunday’s event Dan raised £1,275 – bringing his total to over £12,000 for Marie Curie since his mum died in 2022.
The former pupil of Tudor Grange High School and co-star of the podcast A Gay And A NonGay, is no stranger to marathons having completed the Paris and London marathons as well as the Shakespeare Marathon in Stratford.
