SILHILLIANS moved 29miles further away when they moved house last year.

According to data from AnyVan it showed that Solihull resident bucked the national trend towards shorter-distance moves as affordability, lifestyle changes and regional demand reshaped where people chose to live.

AnyVan, who completed over 320,000 moves in the last 12 months, analysed UK home removal data from 2024 and 2025 to understand how far people were moving in different parts of the country.

While the national average distance moved fell by 14 per cent in 2025, as pressure from companies to return to the office influenced more cautious, localised moves, a smaller number of areas recording notable increases.

Solihull recorded a rise in the average home move distance from 23 miles in 2024 to 29 miles in 2025, an increase of 30 per cent.

This places Solihull among the top ten locations nationally where movers travelled further than the year before.

Last year was shaped by major market events, including the March stamp duty change, interest rate cuts later in the year, and uncertainty following the Autumn Budget. AnVan said in areas like Solihull, households seem to have prioritised factors such as housing affordability, larger properties or outdoor space, and lifestyle choices over commuting distance, travelling further in search of better value.

Angus Elphinstone, owner of AnyVan, said: “The rise of remote and hybrid work over the last five years made moves further afield and working from the other side of the country popular. While this trend seems to be reversing across much of the country as companies reprioritise working collaboratively face-to-face in the office, areas like Solihull prove that affordability and local preferences still play a huge part in where people choose to live.”

At the other end of the scale, Northern Ireland saw the largest fall in home removal distance in 2025 at 42 per cent, followed by Essex Thames Gateway, and South Norfolk.
