SOLIHULL pupils quizzed Meriden and Solihull East MP about his role to mark UK Parliament Week.

Saqib Bhatti MP visited Tudor Grange Primary Academy Yew Tree where he delivered an assembly before being interviewed by members of the School Council.

The Conservative MP spoke to pupils about the role of parliament, explaining how decisions made in Westminster affect those across the United Kingdom.

Mr Bhatti also spoke about how he, in his role as Shadow Minister for Education, strives to ensure that education provision is provided in England.

Yew Tree’s School Council engaged in a Questions and Answers session with Mr Bhatti on his responsibilities as an MP, the challenges he faces in politics and how they could become a MP.

Mr Bhatti said: “Thank you to the School Councillors for their passion in getting involved in learning about Parliament and politics at such a young age. I may have even met a future Member of Parliament. What an honour.

“I will continue to fight for a better education for all pupils across Meriden and Solihull East. All children should receive a quality education, regardless of background or academic challenges. Thank you to the school for the kind invitation to visit.”

UK Parliament Week, which runs from November 24 to 30, is an annual nationwide event that promotes engagement with Parliament by educating residents on its functions and encouraging participation in democracy.

It aims to make people, especially young people, aware of how Parliament works and how their voices can influence issues they care about.

Tudor Grange Primary Academy Yew Tree deputy headteacher Miss Allen said: “The children were keen to question him about his role in government.

“Our School Council leaders aged six to 11 enjoyed the opportunity to find out more and have their questions answered.

“They are excited to write a letter regarding funding for iPads and one of the children said they would like to be an MP when they were older.”
