A SOLIHULL pub has raised around £5,500 for vulnerable carers in the borough.

Since March 2016 the Pub and Duckling on Hatchford Brook Road, Solihull, has been fundraising for Carers Trust Solihull (CTS).

The popular pub has been running weekly quiz nights, raffles, New Year’s Eve parties and other activities in aid of the charity.

CTS is an independent organisation supporting carers and young carers in the borough since 2002.

It provides relief for people who can have their lives severely limited by caring responsibilities.

CTS says funds raised have paid for days out and residential trips for young carers allowing them to take a rare break from their caring duties.

The charity defines young carers as children and young people aged between five and 25 who care for someone at home with a disability, long-term or terminal illness, mental health needs or sensory impairments.

Team manager Gina Ward said: “The charity is a lifeline for young carers and we could not offer the support we do without the kindness and generosity of local businesses and our public support.

“The pub has raised £5530 and is fine example of a local pub, for local people, which really does care about its community”.

Last month one of the charity’s young carers projects won the national Children and Young Peoples Now, Young Carers Award.

It was also awarded the equivalent of £120,000 over three years from national charity Children in Need.

As we reported in April, the CTS told us the number of carers in the borough needing support has risen by a third in the last two years.

The charity says it is appealing for new volunteers to support carers and those willing to help it with fundraising or donations.
