A DATE for the closure of the Mell Square Post Office has been set after more than 50 years of service.
As we reported, a campaign has been working to save the popular and well-used Post Office in Drury Lane, Solihull town centre.
But, despite its efforts, the branch is set to be close on June 12 with services being relocated to WHSmith in Mell Square the day after.
The closure has been confirmed despite a petition against the plans containing more than 1,000 signatures being presented to parliament.
Since the plans were announced last November, they have been met with opposition from local residents and the Communication Workers Union – including during a public consultation.
Along with Solihull, 74 branches are set to close across the UK – with many also having services transferred to WHSmith.
Network and sales director Roger Gale said the change would help ensure the branch is commercially viable into the future and therefore protect Post Office services on which customers in the area depend.
He said: “The Post Office is committed to keeping our services at the heart of communities which we know is hugely important to people.
“This change means we can continue to do that, into the future.
“We are making sure we take the right action to sustain services for years to come.”
