Solihull Pop Chorus head to New York to perform concert with Pitch Perfect producer

COMMUNITY choir Solihull Pop Chorus is set to celebrate its fifth anniversary in New York with a little help from Pitch Perfect producer Deke Sharon.

The group have been invited to perform at an a capella concert at the Lincoln Center which will be conducted by the film maker.

Around 70 of the choir’s 220 adult members will be making the trip to Manhattan later this month.

Anya Small, director of Solihull Pop Chorus, said: “A capella is really challenging for a pop choir like us. We’re used to mastering complex harmonies but, fundamentally, what we do is belt out pop classics to music.

“In a capella singing, all of the sounds are made by the choir and so now we literally have to become the instruments.

“We are all very excited about the trip. It’s a chance to perform on one of the world’s greatest stages, to be coached and conducted by Deke, who is the king of a capella, and to ride the wave of enthusiasm for a capella that the Pitch Perfect movies has created.

“Mostly, however, it’s another brilliant experience for an enthusiastic bunch of ordinary people from Solihull and Birmingham who’ve fallen in love with singing.

“I am very proud of them, just as I am of every single member of the Solihull Pop Chorus family.”

While the group are away, a further 50 singers (adults and children) will be performing at the Help Harry Help Others ball.

Over the past five years the choir has performed at Birmingham Town Hall, sung at major events such as the Help Harry Help Others ball and a banquet for the Lord Mayor of London, flashmobbed unsuspecting shoppers at ResortsWorld, performed on television and recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios.

The New York concert, called Total Vocal, will be live streamed by organisers DCINY and anyone wanting to watch Solihull Pop Chorus performing in the show should follow Solihull Pop Chorus on Facebook.

All links will be posted on March 25 and the concert begins at 7pm UK time.
