Solihull pays tribute to the fallen

POPPIES were pinned proudly to chests as Silhillians bowed their heads in respectful silence to remember the fallen.

A two-minute silence was held while people reflected and remembered those lost in battle.

A service was held outside St Alphege Church in Solihull to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Solihull’s Mayor, Councillor Shanhin Asraf, laid a wreath at the St Alphege memorial alongside other dignatories and organisations.

Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Solihull West and Shilrey MP, and Saqib Bhatti, Meriden Solihull East MP also laid a wreath at the St Alphege war memorial.

Also present at the service were members of the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides, Cubs and Beavers, and veterans who took part in the parade through the town centre.

Music for the outdoor element was provided by Solihull Youth Brass Band, and inside by the combined choirs of St Alphege Church and Solihull School Chamber Choir, and guest choir, the Vinochok Ukrainian Children Ensemble.

Solihull Mayor said: “Every year, on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, we pause as a community to honour the brave men and women who sacrificed everything in service to our nation.

“As Mayor of Solihull, it is always a privilege to stand alongside veterans, families, and residents, paying tribute to those whose courage and determination shaped the world we live in today.

“We must never forget the men and women who gave everything — their youth, their dreams, their very lives — for our freedom.

“But above all, here in Solihull, we must never forget that it is our responsibility to ensure their sacrifices are not in vain.

“Their bravery, their loss, their enduring legacy calls us to action.

“We owe them more than just remembrance; we owe them a world where their struggles have lasting meaning, where their courage lives on in the choices we make, and in the way we treat one another. We owe them nothing less.”
